About Clearwater Wilderness

Designated in 1984, Clearwater Wilderness is a 14,647-acre protected area located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwestern Washington. It lies near the southern Cascade Range, characterized by rugged terrain with steep ridges, dense old-growth forests dominated by Douglas-fir and western hemlock, and subalpine meadows. The wilderness is named after Clearwater Creek, which runs through its core, feeding into the nearby Lewis River watershed. Elevations range from approximately 2,000 to over 5,000 feet, offering a diversity of habitats supporting wildlife such as black bears, mountain goats, elk, and spotted owls. Historically, the area was traditional land for Native American tribes and later used for timber harvesting before wilderness designation helped protect its ecological integrity. Recreation here is largely backcountry-focused, with hiking and backpacking the most popular activities. The Clearwater Trail #131 leads visitors into the heart of the wilderness, culminating at the picturesque Clearwater Lake, a prime spot for fishing and camping. The terrain is steep and rugged, favoring experienced hikers seeking solitude and wild landscapes untouched by development. Unlike more heavily trafficked parks, Clearwater Wilderness offers a quiet, immersive natural experience with minimal facilities and well-maintained trails. The wilderness provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing, wildflower blooms in summer, and spectacular fall foliage. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, spectacular vistas from ridge tops, and the chance to explore a classic Pacific Northwest wilderness setting just a few hours from Portland and Seattle. Access can be limited during winter and spring due to snow and trail conditions. Overall, Clearwater Wilderness appeals to adventurers and nature lovers seeking remote beauty and solitude amid diverse forests and pristine mountain lakes.
